Janice Fleming's Obituary

Created by Jada 4 years ago

Janice Lynn Fleming was born on October 7, 1951, in Buffalo, NY to Albert Johnson and Catherine Hawes. Affectionately referred to as Lynn as a child, she was the eldest of her siblings. Janice was carried into the arms of the Lord on December 3, 2020. She is preceded in death by her father Albert Johnson, her step-father Morriese Rogers, Sr., her mother Catherine Rogers, and her sister Mardine Rogers.

Janice attended Corry Junior High School and Hamilton High School. After graduating in 1969, she briefly attended Tennessee State University. This was followed by attendance at a local business college where she met Joe Perry Washington. They later married on April 14, 1973, and had 11 years of partnership. On March 3, 1977, the couple welcomed a bouncing baby girl named Jada Aisha Washington. Janice was a doting mother who spoiled her daughter rotten. She remarried in 1990, and later that year welcomed bouncing baby boy Christopher Sean Fleming with her ex-husband Calvin Fleming. Chris was also spoiled rotten (much to big sister Jada's annoyance). ðŸ˜‰

Janice was a proud employee at Bell South for many years. After being laid-off, she eventually began employment with FedEx where she created long-lasting relationships and memories with fellow co-workers. She made the decision to retire early and enjoyed a lady's life of leisure that included regular casino trips and travel to Nebraska, Las Vegas, and Tampa with her family.

Janice was a member of New Salem Missionary Baptist Church on Fourth Street where she attended services regularly for many, many years. She acquired her mother's taste in fashion and was known for being "sharp". Janice loved to have fun and would likely be the life of any party. She introduced the Christmas morning quiches decades ago as a breakfast meal, a tradition her daughter Jada still upholds every year. Her sense of humor and candid demeanor left family and friends in smiles and laughter daily.

Janice is survived by her children Jada Washington and Christopher Fleming; brother Morriese Rogers, Jr.; sister Beverly Engleberg; grandson Gavin Modey; nieces and nephews Derrick (Nichelle) Engleberg II, Danielle Rogers-McSwain, Morrisha Rogers, and Julius Ray Jones, Jr.; great-nieces and nephews Me'kyliah Lawson, Daniel Lawson, Jhevin McSwain, Elaina Engleberg, Dillon Engleberg, and Bailey Engleberg; great-great niece Khelani Watson; uncles Malcolm (Hazel) Hawes and Alvin Ray (Mary) Hawes; and a host of cousins, relatives, neighbors, and friends.
